Rick and Carol Leadlay: Thankful for Good Care Received

  • Rick and Carol Leadlay are patients and donors who have made the choice to include the hospital in their will.
  • Rick suffered a major stroke in November 2022. The care they received inspired them to give back to their community.

“Our hospitals are so important for the community. We’re happy to do our part to make sure our friends and neighbours continue to have excellent health care.”

Rick and Carol Leadlay love everything Southampton offers: the quiet, the beach, the river, and watching the fishing boats on the lake. In fact, they’ve spent vacations here since they were both children!

They married in Guelph in 1978. Rick built freezers and dehumidifiers at WC Wood Company, while Carol worked at Bell Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Food & Agriculture. In 1986, they bought a cottage north of the Saugeen River, and twelve years later built a permanent house on the property. In 2007, a few years after they both retired, they realized their dream of finally calling Southampton “home.”

Unfortunately, Rick suffered a major stroke in November 2022. He was cared for in London for two weeks, followed by ten weeks of rehabilitation in Owen Sound. As you can imagine, COVID made this an even more challenging time for them, and Rick was very happy to return home to work on his recovery. With much hard work, he has progressed well, and has recently got his driver’s licence back!

“Over the years we’ve used our local emergency care, surgery, cancer Care, MRI, CT, lab work and more. Nurses, doctors, technical people—they were there for us when we needed them,” – Carol

“We’ve used our local and regional hospitals over the years,” said Rick. “Over the years we’ve used our local emergency care, surgery, cancer Care, MRI, CT, lab work and more. Nurses, doctors, technical people—they were there for us when we needed them,” Carol added. “We give to Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation, as well as the Owen Sound Foundation to help with new equipment and other improvements. We’re thankful for the good care we’ve received.”

Rick and Carol also shared that they have recently added gifts in their wills for both Foundations. “Our hospitals are so important for the community. We’re happy to do our part to make sure our friends and neighbours continue to have excellent health care.”
