A Donation Today Will Help Millions of Times
- Celebrate, recognize, remember a Shining Star with your donation
- Brightshores Owen Sound Hospital needs six new Automated Dispensing Units (ADU) for medication storage and distribution
- It’s the safest simplest way for nurses to quickly and accurately access medications for their patients
- The central pharmacy at the Owen Sound Hospital distributed nearly 1.5 million doses of medication each year
There’s a critical machine inside the hospital that you’ve probably never heard of. It helps store, protect, and distribute medications – it’s called an Automatic Dispensing Unit (ADU). Picture a vending machine that has hundreds of drawers each containing different medications in common doses. Sign into the machine using your fingerprint, select a specific patient, and the ADU will use lights to guide you to the only drawer that’s unlocked. That drawer contains the specific medication you need.
It’s the safest, simplest way for nurses to quickly and accurately access medications for their patients. It will soon be the only way that Brightshores Owen Sound Hospital distributes medications.
Each year nearly 1.5 million doses of medication are distributed from the central pharmacy at Brightshores Owen Sound Hospital. It needs to be simple, speedy and safe.
With your help Brightshores Owen Sound Hospital can get six new top of the line ADUs before the old units breakdown. These units and the associated software upgrades cost $1,059,016. These types of purchases are game changing but they’re not funded by the government. They can’t happen without community support. You can feel pride in supporting local hospitals.
As a pharmacist the new ADUs excite me because of stricter controls for high risk drugs, better tracking of inventory, and staff who are freed up to do critical work. As a husband, friend and neighbour I’m excited about making things safer, simpler and speedier for nurses and their patients.
Donating is your decision but I’m deeply grateful for any gift that you are able to give this holiday season. It will help millions of times over during the life of these machines!
With Gratitude,
Trent Fookes, RPH
Director, Pharmacy, Brightshores Health System
